Tata Steel Kalinganagar Marks Eight Years of Successful Operations

ODISHA (Metro Rail & Steel): Tata Steel Kalinganagar, situated in Odisha, marks a significant milestone as it celebrates eight years since dedicating its greenfield plant – considered India’s largest – to the state. This anniversary is not just a number; it signifies a remarkable journey characterized by sustainable industrial growth, technological brilliance, and community development. The inception of this project traces back to 2004. Since then, Tata Steel Kalinganagar has been pioneering the creation of a modern and environmentally sustainable steel manufacturing facility. This endeavor continues to set benchmarks, not just within the industry but also for the larger landscape of sustainable development.

The evolution of Tata Steel Kalinganagar is a testament to commitment. Overcoming initial challenges, the plant reached a significant milestone on November 18, 2015. Shortly after, commercial operations commenced, heralding a new era for Tata Steel Odisha and the socio-economic fabric of our nation. Envisioning an augmentation of its current capacity from 3 MnTPA to 8 MnTPA by the fiscal year 2025-26, this expansion represents a substantial leap towards fostering economic development, generating employment opportunities and contributing to the overall socio-economic progress of the region.

Integral to this expansive project are key facilities that underscore Tata Steel Kalinganagar’s commitment to sustainable and technologically advanced operations. The Pellet Plant, featuring innovative bag houses for process dedusting and a Travelling Grate Furnace designed to handle challenging ores with precision, embodies the plant’s drive towards enhanced operational efficiency and environmental responsibility.

Moreover, the Phase II expansion incorporates a state-of-the-art Coke Plant II with a capacity of 1.5 MnTPA. This facility includes a comprehensive Zero-Liquid Discharge (ZLD) effluent treatment system and 100% dry quenching, ensuring optimal resource utilization and minimizing the environmental impact of operations.

Tata Steel Kalinganagar’s Blast Furnace II, boasting the world’s second-largest useful volume of 5,870m3, sets the bar for eco-friendly design and operational efficiency. Equipped with a dry type of gas cleaning plant, top combustion type stoves, and a robust dust extraction system, the plant underscores its commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable production practices.

The Cold Rolling Mill, another crucial component of the Phase II expansion, stands as a testament to Tata Steel Kalinganagar’s technological prowess. Equipped with state-of-the-art technologies like solid-state automatic laser welders, automated storage and retrieval systems, and advanced surface inspection systems.
