Chennai Metro Rail Unveils Plans for 23 Multi-Modal Hubs: Locations Revealed, check details

CHENNAI (Metro Rail & Steel): Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) embarks on a groundbreaking phase-2 expansion initiative set to transform commuting experiences through the introduction of 23 multi-modal hubs by 2028. These hubs, an integral part of the expansion project, are poised to redefine transportation connectivity for Chennai’s residents.

The expansive 116.1km Phase-2 network will feature strategically positioned multi-modal hubs, facilitating seamless transfers between metro trains, MTC buses, suburban and MRTS trains, and existing phase-1 metro lines. CMRL aims to streamline commuting with interconnected stations, easing passenger transitions across different modes of transportation. Among the key developments, metro stations in Thiruvanmiyur and Thirumayilai will seamlessly link to MRTS stations, promising effortless commutes. Similarly, at Mandaveli and Madhavaram, direct connectivity between metro stations and bus depots will significantly enhance commuter convenience.

Notably the corridor-3, spanning from Madhavaram to Siruseri Sipcot, will house nine hubs strategically positioned at pivotal locations, including Thiruvanmiyur, Adyar bus depot, Mandavell, Thirumayilai, Chetpet, Ayanavaram, Perambur suburbs, Kilpauk, and Thousand Lights. In tandem, corridor-4, stretching from Lighthouse to Poonamallee Bypass, will introduce five hubs at Kodambakkam, Iyyappanthangal, Poonamallee bus terminus, Nandanam and Vadapalani. The extensive 44.6km corridor-5 will incorporate nine hubs at crucial junctures like Madhavaram bus terminus, Villivakkam bus terminus, Anna Nagar, Koyambedu, Alandur, St Thomas Mount, Vanuvampet, and Kilkattalai.

To ensure effortless interchanges, CMRL plans to create an integrated transport ecosystem, eradicating previous commuter inconveniences. CMRL spokesperson L. Girirajan highlighted the upcoming hubs’ amenities, including covered walkways, passages, lifts, escalators, parking facilities, signage, and kiosks, promising a hassle-free commuting experience. Recognizing the need for enhanced last-mile connectivity, CMRL is actively modernizing and redeveloping MTC bus depot cum terminuses. The redevelopment, which includes provisions for commercial development, aims to seamlessly integrate these hubs with the upcoming phase-2 stations.

Despite these ambitious strides, certain existing hubs in phase 1 present challenges for commuters such as the distance between Guindy’s bus stop and metro station. CMRL remains committed to resolving these issues assuring an overall smoother travel experience for passengers.
