Bengaluru’s Namma Metro Phase 2A Reaches Milestone with Installation of 31-Meter Composite Girder

BENGALURU (Metro Rail & Steel):  Afcons Infrastructure Limited, a prominent construction company in India, achieved a significant milestone in the progress of Bengaluru’s Namma Metro Phase 2A with the successful erection of a 31-meter composite girder. The installation took place at HSR Layout Outer Ring Road in Bengaluru on October 23, 2023.

Composite girders, comprising steel and concrete, represent a robust bridge girder system. Combining the strength and stiffness of steel with the durability and reduced weight provided by concrete, these girders are integral components for sturdy and lasting infrastructure. The intricate operation involved specialized equipment and a crane to carefully position the girder atop the piers, ensuring its stable support. Subsequently, the girder will be linked to other girders to form the bridge deck, a vital phase in the construction process.

The Namma Metro Project Phase 2A is a pivotal endeavor set to expand Bengaluru’s metro network by 72.1 kilometers. Under the aegis of the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), this infrastructural marvel is estimated at a cost exceeding Rs. 56,000 crores. BMRCL’s strategic execution of the Phase 2A and B envisages the creation of the 55-kilometer Blue Line, connecting Central Silk Board to Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) via KR Pura, Nagawara, and Hebbal. The project was initiated in phases, prioritizing the Silk Board-KR line before advancing to the KR Pura to KIA extension.

Anticipated for completion by June 2026, the KR Puram-Kempegowda International Airport extension is a primary focus. Simultaneously, the Central Silk Board-KR Puram segment, specifically the Outer Ring Road route, aligns with a similar completion timeline. The project’s envisioned completion in 2026 aims to significantly benefit Bengaluru’s commuters. It promises to alleviate traffic congestion, mitigate pollution, and enhance the overall quality of life for the city’s populace.
