GreenRail Sweden has inaugurated a new environmentally-friendly freight corridor between Stockholm and Gothenburg, aiming to reduce emissions by using biofuel-powered locomotives. The corridor is part of Sweden’s ambitious green transport initiative to decrease the carbon footprint of its logistics industry.
The biofuel locomotives used on this route have been developed to run on renewable fuel derived from waste products, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% compared to traditional diesel. GreenRail plans to expand these biofuel-powered services to other routes, with the potential to save an estimated 150,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually.
This green corridor has been welcomed by industries across Sweden, particularly those involved in manufacturing and retail. The Swedish government has offered subsidies to support GreenRail’s expansion, reinforcing the country’s leadership in sustainable transport solutions.
