Steel Ministry Nears Finalization of SPEL in Infrastructure Boost

NEW DELHI (Metro Rail & Steel): In a recent development, the steel ministry is on the verge of concluding its Sectoral Plan for Efficient Logistics (SPEL), revealed by the commerce ministry on Friday during the 60th Network Planning Group (NPG) meeting held on November 16.

The detailed presentation at the meeting elaborated on the SPEL strategy, encompassing a comprehensive analysis of supply and demand for iron ore, forecasting requirements up to 2030-31 and beyond, and strategic logistics planning for future readiness. Moreover, the coal ministry made significant strides by presenting key insights from its integrated coal evacuation plan formulated under the Coal Logistics Policy 2023.

The ministry projected a substantial 14% reduction in rail logistics costs through optimizing the railway network for coal logistics. Additionally, it foresees the potential to curtail CO2 emissions by an estimated 100,000 tonnes annually by the fiscal year 2030. This achievement is expected due to the reduction in railway leads and the shift from road transportation to rail, minimizing carbon footprint significantly.
