Siemens secures contract for high-speed freight trains in France

Siemens Mobility has won a €1 billion contract to supply high-speed freight trains for the French national rail network. This initiative, part of France’s green transport transition, aims to increase the efficiency of goods transportation while minimizing environmental impact. The new trains will operate at speeds of over 250 km/h, setting a new standard for rail freight in Europe.

The contract includes the construction of 50 high-speed freight locomotives equipped with advanced braking and aerodynamics to handle heavy loads while maintaining high speeds. These trains will primarily service routes between major logistics hubs such as Paris, Lyon, and Marseille. With an estimated start date in 2027, the project is expected to reduce road freight dependency, helping France cut an estimated 500,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually.

France’s transportation ministry has praised the contract as a major step in reducing traffic congestion and pollution on motorways. According to Siemens Mobility, the trains are designed to integrate seamlessly with existing passenger and freight infrastructure, ensuring minimal disruption to ongoing rail operations.
