Russian Railways has embarked on a major project to expand its rail freight capacity along the Trans-Siberian route to China, aiming to meet increasing demand for cross-border trade. This initiative involves adding double-tracking on key segments and modernizing infrastructure, with a focus on reducing transit times and enhancing capacity.
The expansion project is expected to increase annual freight capacity by 30% by 2028, bolstering trade links between Russia and China. With more than $1 billion allocated for infrastructure upgrades, Russian Railways is also deploying state-of-the-art signaling and communication systems to streamline freight movements.
This strategic expansion aligns with Russia’s ambition to become a central transit hub for Eurasian trade, offering faster and more cost-effective alternatives to maritime routes.
