Mexico City’s metro network has completed a series of structural upgrades to improve earthquake resilience across critical lines. Located in a high-seismic region, the city has invested $500 million in retrofitting key metro stations and reinforcing tracks, particularly along Lines 1, 2, and 3.
The upgrades include reinforced columns, flexible track systems, and advanced monitoring technology that can detect and respond to seismic activity. With these improvements, the metro network is now equipped to withstand earthquakes of up to magnitude 8, offering increased safety to millions of daily commuters.
Mexico City’s mayor has emphasized the importance of this investment, particularly after the devastating 2017 earthquake. By enhancing the resilience of its infrastructure, the city aims to protect lives and ensure that public transit remains operational during emergencies.
