Lashkar-e-Taiba’s Menace: Bomb Threats Hover Over 10 Railway Stations in Haryana

NEW DELHI (Metro Rail & Steel):

India’s extensive rail network, often referred to as the nation’s lifeline, is now under the shadow of a grave threat. An ominous letter, allegedly authored by the notorious terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba, has emerged prompting the Ministry of Railways to intensify security measures across its jurisdiction. The menacing letter was addressed to the station manager of Yamuna nagar Jagadhri Railway Station in Haryana.

The letter, which came to the attention of the Railway Protection Force (RPF), claims to be authored by Kareem Ansari, an alleged area commander of Lashkar-e-Taiba. In it, a disturbingly detailed plan unfolds outlining a series of bombings targeting ten railway stations in Haryana scheduled for November 13. Additionally, the threat includes plans to attack an electricity plant in Jagadhari, a railway workshop, a coach factory, temples and bus stands on November 15. Among the locations specified are Ambala Cantt, Panipat, Karnal, Sonipat, Chandigarh, Bhiwani, Meerut, and Ghaziabad. The chilling letter alleges that these attacks are in retaliation for the deaths of militants in Jammu and Kashmir.

In response to the alarming threats, the Ministry of Railways has issued instructions to local police, the Government Railway Police (GRP), Railway Administration, and State intelligence agencies to reinforce security measures at the identified vulnerable locations. Close cooperation between the RPF, local police, and state intelligence units is in progress to counter this threat. The chief security commissioner of Northern Railway’s RPF has confirmed the receipt of the threat letter and reassured that appropriate actions are underway.

The menace to India’s railway infrastructure a vital national lifeline raises significant concerns. Previous terrorist attacks on railway stations and trains have led to substantial loss of life and property damage. The Ministry of Railways is now tasked with the formidable responsibility of implementing stringent security measures to safeguard passengers and vital infrastructure.

The potential for bombings at railway stations and other locations could instill fear and disrupt train services, affecting the transportation of goods and passengers. Effective counter-terrorism efforts hinge on robust intelligence cooperation among different security agencies. The Ministry of Railways’ decision to involve state intelligence agencies in responding to the threat underscores this critical aspect. Sharing intelligence and coordinating efforts can significantly enhance the chances of preventing potential attacks.

Moreover, technology can play a pivotal role in strengthening security measures at railway stations and other vulnerable locations. Surveillance cameras, metal detectors, and explosive detection systems can help identify potential threats. Regular training and drills for security personnel can enhance their preparedness to manage emergency situations.
