Italy invests in digital freight tracking system

Italy’s largest rail freight operator, Mercitalia, has launched a new digital tracking system for real-time monitoring of freight movements. The system, designed in partnership with IBM, uses IoT sensors and a centralized platform to provide end-to-end visibility on shipments across Italy and Europe.

This digital upgrade is expected to reduce transit times by eliminating inefficiencies, with a projected 20% improvement in on-time deliveries. The tracking system allows customers to monitor the location, condition, and estimated arrival time of their shipments in real-time, enhancing transparency and reliability.

Mercitalia’s investment in digital infrastructure aligns with Europe’s broader goal of integrating technology into transportation to reduce emissions and improve logistics.
