Berlin’s BVG metro operator has announced the introduction of 24-hour service on weekends across its U-Bahn network. This move aims to improve accessibility and convenience for the city’s growing number of late-night commuters, tourists, and shift workers. Berlin joins other major cities offering all-night metro service, addressing the city’s increasing demand for reliable transportation outside typical hours.
The extended hours will apply to all major U-Bahn lines, with additional safety personnel and security measures to ensure passenger safety. BVG plans to launch the weekend service starting in January 2025, following successful trials in the summer of 2024. The decision is backed by city funding, which will cover the extra operating costs.
This change reflects Berlin’s commitment to sustainable urban transportation and supports the city’s efforts to reduce car dependency. With fewer cars on the road during late hours, the BVG hopes to cut down on nighttime traffic congestion and reduce emissions.
