TV Narendran, CEO and Managing Director of Tata Steel Limited was named as the new chairman of the board of governors at IIT-Kharagpur on Tuesday.
Professor VK Tewari, Director, IIT-Kharagpur, said, “We welcome TV Narendran as the new Chairperson of the Board of Governors of IIT-Kharagpur. As a man beholding technical and industrial supremacy, he understands the needs of the society and practical implications of industry-academia amalgamation with a technical institution. We look forward to his able guidance, constructive ideations and supportive encouragement in reshaping this institute for its future aspirations.”
Narendran joined Tata Steel in 1988 after receiving his mechanical engineering degree from the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Trichy, and his MBA from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Calcutta. From 1988 until 1997, he worked in the international trading department, spending five of those years in Dubai managing Tata Steel’s shipments to West Asia. He worked in the marketing and sales division from 1997 to 2001, doing things like supply chain management, sales planning, and market development for the cold rolling mill project.
He served as the long products division’s chief of marketing and sales from 2001 to 2003, during which time he was instrumental in creating the “Tata Tiscon” brand and its distribution system. He served as the company’s main executive officer under B Muthuraman, who was Tata Steel’s managing director at the time, from 2003 to 2005. Before being appointed as MD-Tata Steel India and South East Asia in 2013, Narendran was vice president of the safety and flat products division. He now serves on the boards of the World Steel Association, CEDEP, XLRI, Tata Steel Limited, and Tata Steel Europe.
