The Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KRML) intends to build solar parks in Alappuzha and Kasaragod to meet its energy needs.
The managing director of KRML, Loknath Behera, explained that the plan is to generate all of the energy needed from solar sources. The construction of a solar park will take place on about 45–50 acres of land in Kasaragod.
According to sources, the government is reportedly considering the plan and is anticipated to approve it soon.
“A park will also be set up in Alappuzha to generate electricity solely for the operations of Kochi Water Metro,” Behera said.
“We have plans to generate over 13 megawatts of power from the upcoming solar park at Kasaragod. The discussions regarding the Alappuzha solar plant are in their initial stage,” said an official.
From April 2022 to March 2023, KMRL’s solar plants produced 1, 37, 04,345 KWH of solar energy in total.
The action is a step taken by the KRML to reach zero operational costs by the following fiscal year. Currently, 56% of KMRL’s energy needs are supplied by the solar park at its Muttom yard.
