According to RTI, there are 2.74 lakh open positions in the railways as of June 2023, with more than 1.7 lakhs of those positions falling under the safety category. In response to a request made by RTI activist Chandra Shekhar Gaur of Madhya Pradesh, the Railways stated that 2,74,580 Group C positions, including Level 1, are unfilled. This includes a total of 1,77,924 openings in the safety category.
The ministry responded to Gaur’s query with, “Total number of non-gazetted posts vacant i.e. Group-C (including Level-1) on Indian Railways, as available in this office, as on 01.06.2023 (provisional) is 2,74,580.”
