On Wednesday, MA Siddique, the managing director of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), said that the Detail Project Report (DPR) for the Madurai Metro Rail project would be delivered on July 15.
According to Siddique, the metro rail in the temple city will have a total length of 32 kilometres, including a 27-kilometre elevated structure and a 5-kilometre underground structure.
“We intend to build 27 railway stations. Three of these stations would be subterranean ones close to the Goripalayam, Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, and Periyar bus stop in Madurai. The project will be carried out upon the state government’s receipt of the DPR, the Union government’s approval, and funding from other organisations,” he further stated.
It should be noted that former finance minister Palanivel Thiaga Rajan declared during this year’s budget session that the Madurai rail project will be undertaken at a cost of Rs 8,500 crore in order to transform the perpetually alive and energetic Madurai into an engine of development for the southern region. He also mentioned that Thirumangalam and Othakadai will be connected by the Metro rail.
